Chinese Kasumi Pearls, or Ripple Pearls

Designer pearls jewelry created by Jewelry Olga
Chinese Kasumi pearls have become favorites due to their amazing colors and luster

Recently, we see new varieties of cultured pearls in the market. Among these, we should mention the so-called exotic Chinese Kasumi pearls again.  We also call them Kasumi like pearls or ripple pearls. These exquisite cultured freshwater pearls are distinguished by their amazing colors and iridescence. Iridescence is a play of color.   As a rule, Chinese Kasumi pearls have pretty big size.  Starting at 9 mm, they may reach 16-18 mm.  In general, Kasumi like pearls have baroque shape.  Good quality large pearls are rare and command higher prices.

What makes these newcomers so unusual and exceptionally beautiful? First, we admire their astounding rainbow palette of colors.  The pearls may have very different colors.  They may be golden and silver, pink and bronze.  Moreover, you may find ripple pearls having copper and purple color.  They may be peach, with mauve, blue and green overtones with an amazing silky sheen.

As well, their famous texture makes them unforgettable. They have characteristic features on their surface.  We mean bumps, pitting and wrinkles on the surface (or “skin”).   Thus, we romantically call these pearls “ripple pearls”.  This name makes us think of the ripples on the sea surface. Once you see them, you will never forget these gorgeous pearls..Because they have really a unique and organic look.

Actually, an ideal pearl should have a smooth and blemishes-free surface.  This concerns both natural pearls or cultured pearls.  It is one of the criteria that make any pearl valuable and expensive.  However, Kasumi like pearls do not follow this rule.  They don’t demonstrate the perfection of the surface nor an ideal round shape.  They are different.  But their textured and wrinkled skin makes these pearls exceptionally beautiful and searched for.  As if the pools of nacre and orient are accumulated in the hollows.  This creates vibrant deep colors and a shimmering effect.

These pearls from China have another distinguishing feature.  They have very thick nacre, about 1 mm.   For a comparison, a nacre thickness of the Japanese Akoya pearls is between 0.25 – 0.5 mm. Thus, good-quality Chinese Kasumi pearls will last for generations.  Because their thick nacre will not wear off quickly. Of course you should know how to take care of pearl jewelry .

The first time I saw them, I have fallen in love with these pearls.  Because they have such exotic character and incomparable look. Whenever I wear pearl jewelry created of Chinese Kasumi pearls, I always get compliments.
