Modern Pearl Jewelry and Pantone Color of the Year

Creating modern pearl jewelry, we, jewelry designers, always bear in mind the current jewelry trends.  Some trends appear to disappear soon; others come to stay and then they become classic.  Everyone is willing to know what color will be the most popular this year in clothing, jewelry, cosmetics…

Since 2000, the Pantone Institute based on trend foresight and color connotations chooses a Color of the Year that will dominate during this year.  It is important for designers working in various industries, including jewelry, to know what is the Color of the Year.  We base our future collections on this forecast.  For 2018, the Pantone Color of the Year is Ultra Violet or blue-based purple.  This color will always draw attention as it is rich, dignified and regal.  I like a description of the color given by the Pantone Institute:

Even more: “A dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future”.  Very impressive!

This poetic description encourages us to wear Ultra Violet or to use this color as an accent.  Indeed, it is not one color that is popular.  As well, Pantone releases a color palette – colors belonging to the same color family but having different hues.  Some of these shades of purple are Pink Lavender, Ultra Violet, Spring Crocus, all of them belonging to the purple family.

Actually, purple is not a newcomer.  In 2017, it has already become popular, at least, in jewelry.  Various purple gemstones are known and favorite, including amethyst and tanzanite, sapphires and agate… For me (and, I am sure, for a lot of jewelry designers) this is fantastic news as we may mix and match very different gemstones creating original jewelry.  Moreover, it has been mentioned that yellow including citrus lime will be seen often on the runways in spring.  No doubt, Ultra Violet will pop against bright and cheerful yellows.

Natural Ultra Violet modern pearl jewelry

For many years, the specialty of Jewelry Olga is modern pearl jewelry.  So, if we want to follow the current fashion trends, we need to adapt what we do to what is a trend today.  Pearls having a natural Ultra Violet color are very rare.  However, it is not difficult to find lavender and mauve pearls.  For some of our designer pearl jewelry  we use pearls having rare and unusual colors.  This is the beauty of freshwater pearl.   Nowadays, more and more freshwater pearls with natural remarkable colors appear in the market.  Golden, bronze, mauve, lavender, including strong purples.  Of course, pearls having intense purple color are rare. Still, it is possible to find them.

On the other hand, we enjoy pairing pearls with colored gemstones.  Today, these will be predominantly gemstones that belong to a purple color family including  Ultra Violet.  Indeed, this color is beautiful, dignified and regal.  One of our creations is a tin-cup pearl necklace (or station necklace) featuring a gold or Vermeil chain with pearls of various shapes and colors.  Paired with purple amethyst and neon blue apatite, this long tin-cup necklace looks stunning!

No doubt, we are going to see original modern pearl jewelry where the latest trends will be blended giving new and original jewelry pieces.   Do you want to use Ultra Violet in modern pearl jewelry!?
